Arizona Federal Credit Union competitors with Arizona branch locations. How do those other credit unions feel about their members?

Arizona Federal made $45 million in profits in 2012. Do they need $6 million in new ongoing unavoidable membership fees? No!

Arizona Federal made $45 million in profits in 2012. Do they need $6 million in new ongoing unavoidable membership fees? No!

Some of our supporters did an analysis comparing the statements of how competing credit unions feel about their members. While Arizona FCU looks down on its members, most other credit unions show an appreciation for their member-owners.

See this link to compare and contrast the excessive fees on the Arizona FCU competitor comparison fee spreadsheet. After doing so, find a credit union that does not charge a ripoff ongoing membership fee.

ARIZONA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION in 2012:
https://www.arizonafederal.org/us/#corpprin
“We are not for everyone.”

Our interpretation is that Arizona FCU is arrogantly saying the $36 annual unavoidable fees will run off the members they don’t want, who are disproportionately younger, and poorer, in order to boost their short-term profits and supersize their fee income. We view this as a transfer of wealth from poorer members to richer members, as the richer members are far more likely to receive a year-end bonus, while the poorer members are far more likely only to be paying $36 in annual weasel fees, but not getting a year-end bonus in return. Are the millions Arizona Federal Credit Union has paid to Ronald Westad in salary and compensation, not enough for him? Being a credit union member should be rewarding, not punishing. Being a credit union member should be good for communities, not bad for them. Being a credit union member should help members build wealth, not have $3 sucked from their pockets on the 5th of every month.

ARIZONA FEDERAL CREDIT UNION in 2003:
http://www.cutimes.com/2003/09/17/westads-secret-to-guiding-arizona-fcu-to-1-billion-mark-maintain-uniqueness
“It was quickly evident to me credit unions aligned with my personal values and beliefs,” Westad recalls. “It was very easy to do things for the right reasons. “It wasn’t a matter of how much could we make or how much could we charge members. It was a question of how little could we afford to charge and remain safe and sound,” he said.

Especially since Arizona FCU is well-capitalized and thus safe and sound, there is no need to implement an ongoing unavoidable $3 monthly membership weasel fee. What happened to Ronald Westad’s personal values and beliefs, where he wanted to charge members as little as possible? Arizona FCU is already safe and sound, with a net worth ratio around 10%. Ron, you can eliminate this fee and still remain safe and sound. We are going to hold you accountable.

Now we will examine how other credit unions with branches in Arizona, all of which do not charge an unavoidable monthly membership fee, feel about their members:

Since our humble beginnings, providing friendly and personalized service to our members has been our number one priority. A Credit Union is a “financial cooperative”, which basically means a financial institution owned by its customers (members). Banks may have more products to offer to millionaires, but if you are like most people, you are not looking to spend a bunch of money. You tell us what you want and we listen! TRUWEST CREDIT UNION – SCOTTSDALE AZ
http://www.truwest.org/html/feeguidelines
Truwest has a great description of how the fee schedule should be designed. This shows great respect and consideration for members. Instead of charging all members a $3 monthly fee, as does Arizona FCU which insults members by saying fees are good for them, TruWest gets it right. TruWest feels that members should be charged only for the services they use. Fees should not be used to force-feed services that many members don’t want such as ID Theft protection or car/insurance buying services. Fees should be used to influence negative behavior, such as overdrawing accounts. In contrast, Arizona Federal Credit Union thinks the poorer members should subsidize the richer members, since the poorer members must pay $3 per month in weasel fees, but do not receive commensurate loyalty bonus rewards as the richer members receive. TruWest offers options to avoid fees, instead of punishing you for being a member as Arizona Federal punishes the poorest members the most, trying to run them off.
In regards to fees, TruWest believes that the entire membership should not finance the costs of products or services that only a small portion of the membership uses. Fees are intended to offset the costs associated with a product or service, not to increase the Credit Union’s income. TruWest uses fees to influence member behavior patterns and product selection. Fees are also used to reduce adverse and costly member practices, such as routinely writing checks against insufficient funds. TruWest’s fee programs are designed in such a way that the membership can employ fee “avoidance” or fee “alternative” techniques.

TUCSON FEDERAL CREDIT UNION – TUCSON AZ
http://www.tucsonfcu.com/home/membership/about/better_than_a_bank
We find it admirable, that Tucson FCU mentions their goal is including people of modest means. In contrast, Arizona FCU has turned their back on the poorer members with their bad attitude of “we are not for everyone.”

TUCSON OLD PUEBLO CREDIT UNION – TUCSON AZ

About Arizona Federal Credit Union Members United

Arizona Federal Credit Union Members United is a group of over 100 members and former members who care about our credit union being run fairly. The leadership of the credit union has failed to represent us properly by enacting a new and unnecessary, unavoidable, unconscionable, $3 monthly membership fee that we did not want. The members did not ask for this. Before implementing such a counter-productive fee, the proposal should have been put up for a vote to all the members to decide, so the will of the people is followed. The member-owners of Arizona FCU should not be taxed $3 monthly, simply for being a member. We want all the $3 monthly member fees refunded to all current and past members, the elimination of the fee going forward, and the elimination of the $25 rejoining fee. We are against any financial institution charging an unavoidable ongoing membership fee, simply for being a member. This is the wrong approach. Members and customers should be valued, not punished. We want to see Arizona FCU succeed, not fail. Imposing unfair policies that are detrimental to the long-run success of the credit union and detrimental to society should be abolished.
